Sometimes it is really hard for us to avoid getting caught up in form over substance. Recently I had a wonderful opportunity to reacquaint myself with the axiom that substance will beat form for the true satisfactions in life every time.

I was preparing supper - actually it was 'leftovers' supplemented by some freshly steamed green vegetables - when the doorbell rang. My husband, being the sociable person he is, invited our visitor in to share our evening meal. Initially, I was mortified. Like most hostesses, I like to offer my best when I entertain and here all I had on offer was leftovers.

However, supper passed pleasantly, with laughter and good conversation and all were satisfied. It later occurred to me, that even had I been serving the grandest of dinners, or, if our visitor had been ravenously hungry, nothing could have persuaded him to accept our invitation to dinner if he didn't genuinely enjoy our company. So I took comfort in the knowledge that fine fellowship more often than not trumps fine dining.

This is true for so many things in our lives. We sometimes get so caught up in the detail and the busyness of life that we don?t recognize the real treasures that come our way: simple, genuine human companionship and discourse - no muss, no fuss.

So it is for the team at Ottawa Natural as we celebrate, with pride, our third anniversary. Putting together this magazine is a labour of love for the team, but what has also made it enjoyable is the interaction we've had with everyone who has been a part of it from the very beginning to the present. We've had our challenges and our 'moments' but, in one way or another, we have all learned, grown and changed from being part of the human experience that is this little enterprise. Feel free, one and all, to take a collective bow!

One other totally unrelated thought: as spring progresses along to deliberations about vegetable and flower gardens and lawn care, the 2012 International Compost Awareness Week is scheduled to take place from May 6-12. This year's theme is Give Back to the Earth ... Compost and the Compost Council of Canada at www.compost.org has many useful suggestions on how you can participate and get on board.

We hope you enjoy our third anniversary edition as much as we have enjoyed bringing it to you.

Cheers,
